“In some ways, card magic and paleontology—two of my areas of expertise—seem like fundamental opposites of one another. The first is designed to make the ordinary mysterious, while the latter hopes to make the mysterious understandable. Nevertheless, in my mind, both the art of magic and the practice of science have the power to evoke a similar response: wonder. Wonder, I think, is a precious and seriously underrated value. Sometimes it can motivate us to learn more. Sometimes it's just an amazement at how little we know. Regardless of our level of knowledge, wonder at its best is a feeling of pure joy at the intricate and amazing world we're a part of. Our universe is magnificent—I'd even say beautiful.
